In today’s polarized world, leaders are increasingly challenged to address the risks of division and the unconscious rewards of embracing otherness. It’s easy to turn to blame in conflicts, quickly moving to anger and issuing blame on others for the divisiveness that is so pervasive today. But there is a critical step many people, including leaders, miss, and that is to first look deeply at ourselves – practicing “radical self-inquiry,” and consider the ways any of us have been complicit in, and benefited from, conditions we say we’d like to change or even abhor. Only then can we begin to see and shift the effects of untended, unhealed wounds and beliefs on those we lead. It then becomes possible to redefine leadership, value, and success by discovering our shared sense of belonging – a palpable ache that when addressed can do so much to heal and unite people.
